Hewlett Packard European PanelHewlett Packard prides itself in offering products that meet customer requirements and expectations. The development or optimisation of such products requires HP to know how customers are using their products. A research project was designed to help HP determine how intensively and how frequently their customers use their printers.

Working in conjunction with direct marketing services agency Romtec, Mighty Media was briefed to design and build a web application to capture profiling information about users who had been targeted as part of a direct marketing campaign. In return, people who responded to the site and participated in the on-line profiling exercise received an Amazon voucher worth £15 and qualified for a prize draw of 150 HP 318 Digital Cameras.

Content areas were agreed and site schematics produced detailing a users progress through the site. Site templates were then produced and tested across a range of browsers and operating systems. The web application was produced which captured users information whilst performing authentication checks to validate users credentials at different stages of the process. Mechanisms were established to ensure that browser failures during the registration process meant that users were not then excluded from returning and completing the exercise. Code was constructed and streamlined to ensure that the overhead on the server was kept to a minimum and site stability was not compromised during periods of high activity. The database schema was specified and the prototype produced for testing was then scaled up in-house and scripts supplied to the client to re-create the MS SQL database on their own servers.

The site underwent a rigorous test period using designated groups specified by the client. Tweaks and client additions were made up until 4 hours before the site went live. The project has been great success.
